The Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic is seeking new members from Montgomery County. The Ladies of the G.A.R. was formed in 1881 and is chartered by Congress. It is an older women's hereditary organization than the D.A.R. is for the American Revolution.
Local chapters are called "circles." There is a very old circle still in Dayton, and it wants to obtain new members.
Any woman age 10 or older who is either (A) a blood-related, descendant of a Union veteran of the Civil War OR (B) a blood-related descendant of a person whose brother was a Union veteran of the Civil War is eligible.
The purposes of the Ladies of the G.A.R. are: (1) to edu- cate the members and the public on the service and sacrifice of Union soldiers; (2) to preserve Civil War battlefields, monuments, history, and artifacts; (3) to commemorate Memorial Day as original set aside by the G.A.R.; (4) to catalogue and to mark Union veterans' graves; and (5) to promote patriotism.
To join, you must be able to prove your ancestry to the Union soldier as well as his service. The application fee is $10 plus annual dues of $15 per year.
Contact me for an application.
