Andrew PAINTER, Clark Co., OH, 1840
Death certificates of three PAINTER men known to be brothers--George Washington (1821-1920), John (1832-1919), and Isaac (1837-1919)--all identify their father as Andrew. In the census reports and death certificates for the three, Andrew was reported to be from Ohio or Virginia.(Ohio was once Virginia territory.)
George Washington PAINTER was born in Dayton, Montgomery Co., Ohio, and first married in 1853 in neighboring Clark Co.His son, Emanuel, was born in 1854 in Springfield, Clark Co.George Washington PAINTER later moved to Illinois and lived there for the rest of his life. His second marriage in 1858 was in McLean Co., Illinois.
A John PAINTER--probably ours--married Mary GARLOUGH in 1857 in Clark Co.Our John PAINTER and his wife Mary appeared in the 1860 Census in Springfield Twp., Clark Co.John's son, Edward G. PAINTER and Emma BRILLHART married in 1880 in Clark Co.Edward's son, too, was born in Clark Co.John PAINTER remained in Ohio until after the 1910 Census.
Isaac PAINTER was born in Ohio, and moved to Illinois probably in the 1850s.He married in Champaign Co., Illinois, in 1859.
My father recently made a trip to the National Archives to examine census records. He found an Andrew PAINTER in the 1840 Census in Springfield Twp., Clark Co., Ohio, who may be the father of the three brothers. The household of this Andrew PAINTER consisted of:
1 male aged 30 to under 40 [Andrew]
1 male aged 10 to under 15 [unknown]
2 males aged 5 to under 10 [possibly John, age 8 and unknown]
2 males under 5 [possibly Isaac, age 3, and unknown]
1 female aged 30 to under 40 [unknown]
1 female aged 15 to under 20 [unknown]
If this is the family of the three PAINTER brothers, it is possible that George Washington PAINTER, then aged 19, was on his own.As a young man, he is said to have been a stage coach driver, and 1852 he was working in the livery trade in Springfield, Clark Co., as is shown in a city directory.
This census record was indexed only by county, not by name.Previously, we thought that, in the 1840 Census for Ohio, an Andrew PAINTER in Liberty Twp., Clinton Co., possibly was our Andrew PAINTER.Since the 1840 Clark Co. Andrew PAINTER was born no earlier than 1800, it seems that this is not the Andrew PAINTER who married Elizabeth MINICK in 1814 in Muskingum Co., Ohio.
An Andrew PAINTER married Abigail MILLS in 1821 in Warren Co.Warren Co. is a bit to the southwest of Clark Co., separated by Greene Co.
We have yet to find any of these PAINTERs in the 1850 Census.
A Jane PAINTER married Asahel FRANKLIN 25 Apr 1852, Clark, Ohio. This is of particular interest because the name of the husband appears in the 1840 and 1860 Census in Springfield Twp., Clark Co., Ohio.
Would appreciate any information or ideas. My thanks,
Eric E. (Robert K., Earl Irving, Emanuel, George Washington, Andrew) PAINTER
