Have you gotten a death certificate for John? As you know his death date and place, that's the first thing you need to do, for they generally have where a person was born, and often, his parents' names and where they were born. If that doesn't work out, then get death certificates for his children, as they will probably have where John was born, giving you a place to work with. Have you checked the Ohio Historical Society online site, to see what newspapers they have, for when and where John died? That might contain an obit...the newspapers are filmed and available through inter-library loan.
