Hi TK: I don't think any one is being a purist. It seems to me Miles is simply saying he would like to find David Lowe's birth certificate.
I doubt Miles expects to find a record of birth in a census record. He has a lot of census records now for David Lowe, through his own searching and with help from you and others. He also has a marriage record for David Lowe's first marriage and knowledge of a second marriage (the second wife appears in the 1875 Iowa census with him, and is named on their daughter's death cert, and he names both wives in one military record posted in another thread).
This may be a case of someone posting in a number of forums simultaneously (which Genforum ENCOURAGES people to do) and then being surprised by how many people responded, and how quickly, and with so much information. Miles is trying to coordinate all and alert everyone of the situation.
Thanks for your patience with this search. I hope you'll continue to contribute to the collaboration - you are a valued researcher (I've noticed your participation in other threads) and you may indeed be able to located information that no one else can.
Regarding the birth certificate: David was born more or less 1835. His parents are William Lowe and Mary Sanderlin(e). Census records that we think belong to his family are:
1840 Wm Low in Richland County, Ohio
1830 Wm Low in Cripple Creek, Jefferson County, Ohio
William and Mary were married in Jefferson County, Ohio, in 1828. Miles has the marriage record.
All good wishes, JC
