I am searching for the ancestors of Sylvanus Skellenger born about 1832 in NY. Very little is known about his life so far, as only one census data-point has been found for him. However, it is well documented that he was a Civil War veteran. The following is what is known about his life:
He enlisted in the US Army on 10 Sept 1861 in Ohio and was assigned as a Private to Co H, 51st IR Ohio. He remained with that unit until 3 Oct 1865 when he was mustered out of the army in Victoria, TX. Sylvanus is noted next in the 1870 US Census, living in Hanover, Licking, OH. Living with him in this census is a child, Adaline Skellenger, b. 1867 in OH, presumably, his daughter. Sylvanus is not noted (so far) in the 1880 US Census or the 1890 Veteran’s schedule. This leads me to speculate that he may have died before 1880/1890 time frame. No additional data has been found on his possible daughter, Adaline Skellenger.
The Find a Grave memorial for Sylvanus is at the following link:
There are many Skellengers (possible descendants of William Schellenger, 1717-1793), who were born in CT/NY, and moved westward, however, I have not been able to identify Sylvanus’ parents or other ancestors. Any help in identifying the line of descent of this American patriot will be greatly appreciated.
r, Mike Skelenger
