If you know where he passed away, I would suggest contacting the library to see if they will look it up for you. Sometimes they do it for free, sometimes a small fee like $1, other times much more. I have had a library say they charge $30.

Maybe also, www.obituaries.com. But it is much easier to use if you know the state in which they passed away in. But I have found it is hit or miss with this website personally. I have only found one on it so far. So I don't know if that is due to not having the right state or it is just not there.
