Karen, when a male purchased land he did not need the OK of his wife.On the other hand, when he sold the land, he did need approval of his wife, and this is reflected in the deed.
If these records are 1835, and prior to 1840, you are looking in the wrong Cos.Lake Co was formed 1840 from Geauga and Cuyahoga Cos, so you need to check one of these Cos.You will have to determine from twp maps, etc where in Lake Co your family lived. They most likely didn't move, only the Co lines changed, but you need to know where, so you can contact the correct Co.I checked Federal Land Patents to see which Co the family had resided prior to 1840, but he didn't have patent.
1830 Ananias SCOFIELD 60-70 yrs old, was still in Tompkins Co NY. Is this the right person?
The only SCOFIELD 1840-50 in Lake Co is Jonathan b 1819 NY, with family.According to findagrave, he m Nancy HALLACK 2-29-1840 Geauga Co....so this might be helpful, as far as location goes.
