Sorry I got busy the last couple of months and never replied. I have posted to the Phillips group often but have never made a general Ohio state post. My ancestor was William Henry Phillips, he was listed as Henry in his obit. We know he was born 4/17/1848 in Ohio but I have been unable to find him in census reports in 1850 or 1860. He died in Gibson Co, IN in 1909. Most list his mother as born in PA, father in OH. His death cert does not list a father's name but lists his mother as Sarah Ann Norris. I do not know if this was maiden or married name and I really don't trust deth certificates for accurate parentage. DNA testing shows an exact match with the Phillips family of Richard and Francina Hart Phillips of Coshocton county. My Henry also registered for the Civil War in Roscoe, Ohio in 1864 and fought in Co H of the Ohio 51st regiment per his war records. *Of note, my William Henry Phillips was not the son of Enoch and Ann Roderick Phillips. Their son William Henry was born 2/27/1849 and died 5/27/1904 and was married to Louisa Dencer. Most researchers try to tie my ancestor here but I've eliminated that possibility. My Henry was married in 1866 in Pike Co, IN to Margery Chance, dtr of Samuel Chance and Nancy Wilson originally of Coshocton county. Margery's family had been in Spencer Co, IN in the 1850 census, then Pike Co, IN in 1860. I have looked through all of the William and Henry Phillips' in Ohio that match the age and have been unable to find Henry in 1850 or 1860. In 1850 Pike Co, OH, I found a William H. Phillips age 1 in the household of Elijah Nichels on page 318. On page 317 is a Sarah A. Norris living with her family at age 13 and a few houses down is a 17 yr old William Phillips. I had wondered if possibly this William Henry was the offspring of two unmarried teenagers but reached dead ends after. I have worked for over 25 years on this ancestor and have had no breakthroughs. Of note is the fact that many of the Coshocton Phillips descendants ended up in counties adjoining Gibson Co, IN (i.e. Wabash Co, IL and Knox Co, IN). Also there is a Mary J. Phillips b 1842 OH who was married to Joshua Chance b 1830 in Coshocton, OH. They were living in Knox county in 1870, then in Gibson county in 1880. Another researcher and I feel this is a likely connection of some sort. I am at the point where I would pay a professional researcher but if some of you Ohio researchers would like to take a crack at this mystery, it would be appreciated. I don't know what other local resources are available in Ohio. I have been to Coshocton once for two days but came away empty handed. Thanks. Notify Administrator about this message?
