Thanks for the point in another direction. The reason he isn't listed on the 1930 Census for Colorado is that he's in the VA Hospital in Sheridan, Wyoming - again, listed as an inmate.
I don't know if Walter was married more than once. Everything my grandmother told me before her death doesn't point to him being married to anyone other than Isabelle. Isabelle herself was born in Ohio to James D. Mathias and Elizabeth Edwards.
Knowing that his father's name is Jacob, though, does give me a push in the right direction to find his family. Hopefully, someone will have Jacob's first wife listed somewhere so that I can find Walter's mother's name. Ultimately, my father received his first name because of this ancestor - he's named after two uncles, one of whom is named George Walter after his mother's father.
