Cook and Miller Marriages in Mercer County

My wife's ancestor, Edwin Russell Cook, married Mary Ann Sands in Mercer County on April 6, 1845. In the marriage license application,Edwin was represented by Michael Miller.

The next marriage license application was by Michael Miller, who married Mary Ann Shepherd on April 5, 1845.

I believe it is no coincidence that these two applications are linked. However, I don't know what it means.

I am trying to figure out why Edwin, who was from New York, and Mary Ann, who was from Pennsylvania, were married in Mercer County. They eventually settled in Marion County, Ohio.

I would appreciate information about these people.
