I AM SEEKING INFORMATION ABOUT NATHAN MATTESON WAS IN LORAINE CO OH AS EARLY AS 1836 AND UNTIL 1847. IN 1850 HE WAS LISTED IN THE CENSUS OF GRANT CO. WI. I WANT TO LEARN THE NAMES OF HIS PARENTS AND ANY OTHER FACTS ABOUT HIS LIFE . BELOW S A SUMMARY OF WHAT I HAVE LEARNED ABOUT THIS FAMILY.

# SURNAME 1st NAME SPOUSE PED. #

1 WOODARD ORVAL BERNICE MARAS
2 WOODARD WILLIAM ALICE POTTER 3
5 MATTESON MARY JOHN WOODARD 4
10 MATTESON PHILLIP SARAH COSTLEY 11
20 MATTESON NATHAN MARY McKINLEY 21

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON OUR MATTESON LINEAGE #5

THE NAME MATTESON IS MEANS "SON OF MATTHEW". THERE ARE SEVERAL SPELLING VARITIONS OF THE NAME, INCLUDING MATSON, MATTHEWSON, MATTISON, MATHESON, MADISON AND SO ON.
THE ORIGIN OF THIS LINEAGE IS UNCERTAIN. THE IMMIGRANT MAY HAVE CAME FROM ULSTER CO., IRELAND BUT WAS PROBABLY BORN IN ENGLAND. THE IS SOME EVIDENCE THAT THE FAMILY CAME FROM DENMARK.

MARY REBECCA MATTESON, #5, OUR FRATERNAL GRANDMOTHER,WAS BORN 13 JAN 1859, IN ELLENSBORO TWP, GRANT CO. WISCONSIN,THE YOUNGEST DAUGHTER OF PHILLIP MATTESON AND SARAH COSTLEY. HER FATHER DIED ALMOST FOUR MONTHS BEFORE SHE WAS BORN. THE FAMILY IS LISTED IN THE GRANT CO. CENSUS OF 1860 AND 1870.
HER MOTHER MARRIED NATHANIEL WAYNE, BROTHER OF OUR GREAT GRANDMOTHER ELIZABETH WAYNE, IN 1871. THE FAMILY MOVED TO CRAWFORD CO.,WIS.,WHERE HER STEPFATHER LIVED. MARY HAD ONLY ONE SISTER, (PHILENA), WHO LIVED TO ADULTHOOD AND TWO HALF BROTHERS,JAMES AND JOSEPH WAYNE..
ACCORDING TO THE MARRIAGE RECORDS OF SCHUYLER CO., MISSOURI, MARY REBECCA MATTESON MARRIED JOHN WOODARD ON 21 DEC.,1877. APPARENTLY HER STEPFATHER HAD TAKEN THE FAMILY TO MISSOURI FOR A TIME AND THAT IS HOW SHE HAPPENED TO BE THERE. HER STEPFATHER AND FAMILY MOVED BACK TO CRAWFORD CO. WIS.
JOHN AND MARY (MATTESON) WOODARD LIVED IN MISSOURI AT LEAST UNTIL 1879, WHEN OUR FATHER WAS BORN. DAD CLAIMED HE WAS BORN IN ADAIR CO., MO., SO MAYBE THEY LIVED THERE FOR A WHILE. THEY ARE LISTED IN THE 1880 CENSUS OF CLOUD CO.,KANSAS. HOW THEY HAPPENED TO BE THERE I DON'T KNOW BUT THEY DIDN'T STAY LONG. BY 1881, THEY WERE BACK IN CRAWFORD CO., WIS., WHERE THEIR SECOND CHILD (OUR AUNT MYRTLE) WAS BORN. THEY FINALLY SETTLED IN STEUBEN,CRAWFORD CO. WIS., WHERE THEY LIVED UNTIL MARY REBECCA DIED FROM A HEART PROBLEM, ON 19 NOV 1908.       THE CHILDREN OF MARY REBECCA MATTESON AND JOHN WOODARD ARE LISTED IN THE WOODARD LINEAGE DATA.
************************************************************
PHILLIP MATTESON, #10, OUR FRATERNAL GREAT GRANDFATHER, WAS BORN ABOUT 1825 IN OHIO,ACCORDING TO THE 1850 CENSUS OF GRANT CO. WIS. PHILLIP WAS LISTED AS AGE 25. I WAS NOT VERY SUCCESSFUL RESEARCHING THE MATTESONS IN OHIO, WHERE THEY LIVED BEFORE MOVING TO WISCONSIN IN ABOUT 1847.
PHILLIP MATTESON WAS MARRIED ON 2 MAR.1851 TO SARAH COSTLEY IN LINDEN, GRANT CO. WIS. THE MARRIAGE RECORD SAYS THAT HE WAS OF HIGHLAND AND SHE FROM WINGVILLE, BOTH TOWNS BEING IN GRANT CO. THEY PROBABLY LIVED IN ELLENSBORO, GRANT CO. FOR THE NEXT SEVEN YEARS.
PHILLIP MATTESON DIED IN ELLENSBORO, 0N 22 SEPT. 1858 AT ONLY AGE 33. HIS PROBATE RECORD IS ON FILE IN GRANT CO. BUT I NEVER LEARNED WHERE HE WAS BURIED. HIS WIDOW REMARRIED IN 1871 TO NATHANIEL WAYNE, BROTHER OF OUR GREAT GRANDMOTHER, ELIZABETH WAYNE.

THE CHILDREN OF PHILLIP MATTESON AND SARAH COSTLEY WERE:

1       MARTHA JANE MATTESON, BORN ABOUT 1852/3,DIED ABOUT 1858. THERE WAS A CHOLERA EPIDEMIC IN GRANT CO AT THAT TIME WHICH MAY HAVE CAUSED THE DEATH OF BOTH MARTHA AND HER FATHER.

2 PHILENA MATTESON WAS BORN ON 23 JUNE 1854. SHE WAS MARRIED 18 JUN. 1880 IN CRAWFORD CO.WIS. TO GEORGE WAYNE A COUSIN OF NATHANIEL WAYNE. THEY HAD 5 CHILDREN ALL BORN IN WISCONSIN. IN 1894 THE FAMILY MOVED TO ROYALTON, MINNESOTA AND IN 1905 TO ROBINSON, N.DAKOTA. PHILENA DIED IN 1949 AT AGE 95.
3 AN INFANT WHO DIED YOUNG

4 MARY REBECCA MATTESON OUR ANCESTOR.
************************************************************
4 NATHAN MATTESON,#20, OUR GREAT GREAT GRAND FATHER, WAS BORN ABOUT 1790 IN OHIO,ACCORDING TO THE 1850 CENSUS OF GRANT CO WIS. HE WAS LISTED AS AGE 60. THERE IS REASON TO DOUBT THIS INFORMATION HOWEVER, SINCE OHIO DID NOT BECOME A STATE UNTIL 1803. THE FIRST SETTLEMENT IN THE AREA WAS ABOUT 1788 AT MARIETTA.
WE KNOW THAT NATHAN WAS IN LORAINE CO., OHIO IN 1836 AND BOUGHT LAND THERE IN HOMER TWP. IN 1840 THAT AREA BECAME PART OF MEDINA CO.,OHIO. ON 1 SEPT. 1847 HE SOLD THE SAME LAND AND BY 1850 WAS IN GRANT CO. WIS.
SOME TIME PRIOR TO 1825, NATHAN WAS MARRIED TO MARY
MC KINLEY, WHO ACCORDING TO THE CENSUS DATA, WAS BORN IN PENNSLYVANIA ABOUT 1800. THEIR OLDEST CHILD WAS PHILLIP, WHO WAS BORN IN 1825.
NEITHER NATHAN MATTESON OR HIS WIFE MARY WERE LISTED IN THE 1860 OR 1870 CENSUS OF GRANT CO. WIS. BUT SOME OF THEIR CHILDREN WERE STILL THERE. IT SEEMS PROBABLE THAT THEY HAD DIED THERE, BUT I FOUND NO PROOF.

THE CHILDREN OF NATHAN MATTESON AND MARY McKINLEY, ALL BORN IN OHIO ACCORDING TO THE CENSUS, WERE:

1 PHILLIP MATTESON, OUR ANCESTOR.

2 DAVID MATTESON, BORN ABOUT 1833, MARRIED 19 AUG 1855 IN IOWA CO. WIS. TO REBECCA BRACHEN. I FOUND HIM LISTED IN THE 1870 CENSUS OF MITCHELL CO. IOWA.

3 WILLIAM MATTESON, BORN ABOUT 1835.

4 MARY MELISSA MATTESON, BORN 21 JULY 1834, MARRIED EDWARD REID AT LANCASTER ,GRANT CO., IN 1861,AND DIED 6 JUN 1901 AT ELLENSBORO,GRANT CO. WIS. THEY HAD 7 CHILDREN ,ELIZABETH, WILLIAM, HENRY, PHILIP, EUGENE, JAMES, AND MARY.

5 JOSEPHINE MATTESON, BORN ABOUT 1840, MARRIED ELIAS WORLEY,

6 HESTER MATTESOM, BORN ABOUT 1847, MARRIED FRANK BELKIN. THEY HAD 4 CHILDREN, PHILLIP,JOHN, SUSAN, AND JOANNA.

7 SARAH MATTESON. WAS BORN ABOUT 1830. SHE WAS NOT LISTED IN THE 1850 CENSUS OF GRANT CO. WIS. SARAH MARRIED DANIEL BURTON, HIS SECOND WIFE, IN 1852, AND DIED IN 1880.
************************************************************
I NEVER LEARNED FOR CERTAIN WHO THE PARENTS OF NATHAN MATTESON WERE BUT THERE IS SOME EVIDENCE THAT HIS FATHER MAY HAVE BEEN PHILLIP MATTESON WHO WAS BORN ABOUT 1760 IN WEST GREENWICH, RHODE ISLAND. IF THIS CONNECTION PROVES TO BE TRUE THEN OUR MATTESON LINEAGE WOULD CONTINUE AS FOLLOWS:
************************************************************
       # 40, PHILIP MATTESON,BORN ABOUT 1759 IN R.I. HE MARRIED FIRST (NAME NOT KNOWN),PROBABLY IN DORSET,VERMONT AND HAD TWO CHILDREN, NATHAN AND JESSE. THIS NATHAN WAS PROBABLY OUR ANCESTOR. PHILLIP MARRIED SECOND SALLY (CURTIS) HYDE,DAUGHTER OF ZACHARIAL CURTIS, ON 6 MAY 1793 IN DORSET VERMONT, AND THEY HAD 4 CHILDREN, BETSY, SABRINI, JULIA AND SARAH. PHILLIP MATTESON DIED IN BUFFALO N.Y. ON 3 MAY 1827, AGE 68.
PHILLIP MATTESON WAS A VETERAN OF THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR. HIS SECOND WIFE, SALLY (CURTIS) APPLIED FOR A PENSION IN 1845,(# 18492), BASED ON HIS SERVICE. ONE OF THE AFFIDAVITS PRESENTED IN THE APPLICATION WAS GIVEN BY A GEORGE WOODARD OF RIDGEVILLE, COUNTY OF LORAIN, OHIO. THIS SEEMS TO SHOW A CONNECTION BETWEEN THE OUR NATHAN MATTESON IN LORAIN CO., OHIO AND SAMUEL MATTESON. THERE MIGHT EVEN BE A CONNECTION BETWEEN GEORGE WOODARD AND OUR WOODARD LINEAGE.
