Did Montgomery Township exist in 1833?

My g-grandfather's Civil War record states that he was from Montgomery, Ohio - don't know if it is Montgomery Township, Montgomery County. There are now 4 Montgomery Townships (Ashland, Franklin, Marion and Wood counties). His name was John William Campbell, b. 1 Jan 1833. Am about to give up. Any help greatly appreciated.
