Rachel Painter, born May 1842 in Fairfield Township, Madison County, Ohio, was a daughter of Joel Painter and Jemima Allen. Rachel and her family can be found in the 1850 and 1860 censuses for the township. She married first Francis M. Timmons on 21 November 1866 in Madison County, and married second—-as Rachel Timmons-—to Thomas “Agen” on 15 December 1869, also in Madison County.

The 1870 census shows Thomas and Rachel “Hagens” together with Alexander, born November 1869—-a month before Thomas and Rachel were married. Alexander, who would have been conceived in early 1869, may have been a son of Rachel’s first husband—Francis M. Timmons’ date of death is not known. In the 1880 census, the only additional child was Oscar, age 6. (Also in the household in 1880—-and confirming identity—-was Rachel’s brother, John Painter, who was disabled. John Painter’s wife, Nancy J., lived in another township in Madison County—in the same dwelling with her brother, but in a separate household.)

In the 1900 census, Thos. and Rachel Agen were boarders. She is shown to have been married for 31 years—almost correct—and to have had a total of 13 children of whom 5 were living. The number of children is probably incorrect. In the 1880 census, at age 38, she had only two children. It seems unlikely that between the ages of 38 and 58 she would have added so greatly to her family.

Neither Thomas nor Rachel appear in the 1910 or 1920 censuses. Was not able to find Oscar after 1880, but Alex Agen was in Fairfield Township in the 1910 census with a wife and children.
