Bill, these are the articles I was talking about -- very interesting, but embarrassing! Do you think that Lucas County has these records, and if so, could you please tell me where or whom to contact?

The Daily Herald Delphos, Ohio - Jan 1, 1898, and the Steubenville Harold Star, 6 JAN 1898

COUNTERFEITERS

Officers Are Hot After a "Den" in Paulding County.

Two alleged leaders of a band of counterfeiters were arrested at Cecil, Paulding county, Tuesday. The men are Henry Luce and Alexander Thompson. On the person of Luce was found a printed oath which all members of the Y.A.R.M. were compelled to take. The Y.A.R.M. is supposed to be the abbreviation of the name of an organized gang and the oath is a most strict and severe one, and binds the members firmly under the penalty of death if they violate the obligation. A gang of counterfeiters has been flooding this and surrounding counties with the spurious coin, which is made in the denominations of half dollars and dimes. The "den" where the "queer" is made has not been located, but the officers think it is in Paulding county, in the sparsely settled district.

The imitations are very cleverly made and hard to detect.

GOOD CAPTURE

Two Alleged Counterfeiters Lodged in the Toledo Jail.

Toledo, Jan. 6 -- Deputy United States Marshal Shannon and Capt. Webb of the secret service returned to this city from Paulding county, having in charge Henry Luce and Dr.(sic) Alexander Thompson, two residents of that county, charged with passing counterfeit half dollars. It is known that an organized gang of counterfeiters inhabit the swamps and forests of that county. When searched several blank certificates of membership in an oathbound society were found on Luce.
