DEXTER as a given and middle name. Surnames: CROWNER, FORBES, SHELDON, OBITTS

Hiram Dexter Sheldon 1848 - 1906
Ernest Dexter Forbes 1882 -
James Dexter Obitts 1874 - 1939
Dexter P. Crowner 1846 -

In one way or another, these ancestors are related, but I do not have an idea about where the name Dexter originates, or if the selection of the name is somehow connected between families.

Hiram Dexter Sheldon was the son of Benjamin Sheldon, Jr. (1821 - 1897), and Lucy C. White (1823 - 1906). Originally from NY, this family moved to Lorain County, Ohio, with parents Benjamin Sheldon, Sr. (1791 - 1870), and Lovisa Rice (1796 - 1870) about the time that Hiram Dexter was born.

I have not been able to locate the parents of his mother Lucy C. (White) Sheldon from Delaware County, NY, and although Hiram Dexter appears in the US census records 1850 and 1860, he disappears. It is the obituary of his mother Lucy C. White that mentions a surviving son, which is not him.

Ernest Dexter Forbes was the son of Hiram H. Forbes and Lucy Ann Shelon (1863 - 1921), daughter of Benjamin and Lucy C. White (above).

James Dexter Obitts was the son of Charles Obitts (1849 - 1891) and Sylvina "Vina" Sheldon (1856 - 1929), who was also a daughter of Benjamin Jr. and Lucy C. White.

Dexter P. Crowner adds a different dimention. His parents were Charles Crowner and Mary Gott of Lorain County. He was b. 1846 and d. in Flint, Ohio, in 1906. I am still working on making the connection to (possibly and aunt) Rhoda Crowner who m. Nathaniel Johnson, and who also settled in Lorain County.

Benjamin Sheldon Sr.'s mother was Susana Johnson, and I am also working on connecting Susana Johnson to Nathaniel's family, but I feel there is a connection somewhere.

So... not sure where the name Dexter comes from. Could it be a maiden name of Lovisa Rice's mother (have not ID'd her parents yet) or a given name of Lucy C. White's father, or the surname of her mother?

Time and research will tell... if you happen to come across a DEXTER name in your Lorain County family, this might be a good place to analyze any connection(s)!

Thanks...

Jack Sheldon
