Sheldon --> Howk --> Rowland - Our Connections in Wellington

Studying the Census records and online periodicals available via Ancestry.com, I'm making some headway into 'new' territory for our Sheldon family research.

Benjamin and Lovisa (Rice) Sheldon had 7 children. Benjamin was a veteran of the War of 1812, and is numbered SFA (Sheldon Family Association) No. 6161. My genealogy researched has been focused with this family and their descendents, since this has not been previously documented by the SFA. Benjamin and Lovisa are interred in the LaGrange Twp. Cemetery, Lorain County.

One area of curiosity has been with sibling number 7, James Sheldon m. Adaline West, of Wellington, Lorain County, Ohio. Richard Kurish, who is a respected GenForum contributor, has helped me immensely with my initial work on this family. James is a younger brother to our lineage of David F. Sheldon who married Adaline Crandall, also of Lorain County, Ohio.

This family intrigues me because we have a photograph of my g-grandfather Frank M. Sheldon (son of David F. and Adaline (Crandall) Sheldon) standing next to Charles Sheldon (Charles is the son of James Sheldon, mentioned above) while visiting Wellington, Ohio circa 1922. We also have a photograph of a group of women, of only two are identified, taken on the same day.

The family of James and Adaline (West) Sheldon include children Charles and Lettie. According to Census records, Lettie married Albert Howk. In the 1900 Census, I find them living together with James "father in law" and Adaline, as well as Charles. Thanks to the Census, the relationship is identified to HOWK. Initially, I thought this was "HAWK" from the cursive writing, but research in area newspapers online point to "HOWK" as the spelling of this surname. More doors open.

Albert and Lettie (Sheldon) HOWK gave birth to a child named "Cassie," originally (me) mistaken for "Carrie" from the loose "ss" in the cursive writing. A periodical search for HOWK in the area resulted in finding a wedding announcement for Cassie Howk's marriage to Ralph Rowland scheduled for October 1, 1905.

That is quite a find, as I then locate Ralph and Cassie Rowland in the 1920 Census with children Albert C (or Charles A -- as noted in the 1930 Census), Sheldon, and Eva. Now, I see the origin of the "Charles" and "Sheldon" given names!

In the Wellington, Lorain County, Ohio, 1930 Census I find this family living with "Grandma" Lettie (Sheldon) Howk, except Ralph Rowland is not listed, so I presume he passed away between 1920 and 1930. However, children Charles A., Sheldon L., and Eva M. are listed with (mother) Cassie Rowland.

It amazes me that I can find this information at my fingertips right at my home office computer.

Jack
