Elijah Fitch BOWMAN (1857-1934), a "Showman"

I am looking for information on the Elijah Fitch BOWMAN who died on 22 Dec 1934, Proctorville, Lawrence Co., OH. He was born on 28 Jan 1857, probably in Brown Co., OH. He apparently made his living as a "Showman," as he is listed in the 1900-1920 censuses with that occupation. I am curious what exactly that word means, but I couldn't find anything on his work life through Google. I suspect that he was a minor league P. T. Barnum, or something similar, but I would like to verify this. Elijah lived in the following locations.

1900 Census: Petersburg Pct., Boone Co., KY.
1910 Census: Green Twp., Adams Co., OH.
1920 Census: Rome Pct., Lawrence Co., OH.

These are all near the Ohio River, which would be expected to have a large amount of traffic, not to mention population. I will post queries on several boards and hope that someone is familiar with Elijah. I really would like to find out more about him. Thanks.
