Samuel Hunter was one of the original settlers in Steubenville, I have found conflicting information on his orgins. I do know that he came to Steubenville from Washington Co, PA in about 1797 and he bought property on the corner of 3rd and Market St where he had a general store. He was married to Mary Larimore and was the father of James Hunter, the first settler child born in Steubenville (September 18, 1798). Samuel later moved to Knoxville where he died February 1837. He is buried in Island Creek Cementary.
I am trying to verify his parents, I have seen references to him being born in either County Tyrone, Ireland; Scotland; amd Westmoreland Co, PA, the son of James Hunter and an unknown mother. I am descended from Samuel's daughter, Esther Hunter who married James Hamilton (born in Leacock Twp, Lancaster Co, PA) in 1820 in Steubenville.
Any info on Samuel' orgins and his parents would be greatly appreicated.
