Hi Margaret... I do know the cemetery has been transcribed because the last time I was in Portsmouth I ran across a book in the public library there which had transcriptions of Jackson County cemeteries, including Stephenson. I made note of it because I have ancestors buried there. Unfortunately I sent my copies of the Stephenson index to a friend and neglected to make another copy for myself. I will be visiting Portsmouth in the next week or so and will find the book again and forward the information to you, if someone hasn't done so by the time I return. Stephenson is an historical cemetery that served the early pioneers of Hamilton Twp until the cemetery at Hamilton-McCoy Church was established. Among those buried at Stephenson are veterans of the War of 1812. Sadly, the last report from a cousin of mine was that this cemetery is now on private property and is being lost to the forest, with many of the old stones overgrown with brush and trees. She stated that at the time she visited several years ago she believed it would take some effort now to locate and verify all of the stones listed in the index. I tried to find Stephenson during my last trip home but couldn't locate it. I have a few photos posted from Stephenson that will give you an idea of the condition of the cemetery. http://www.gillilandtrails.org/cemeteries/jctombstones.asp -- Kate Notify Administrator about this message?
