In researching my family, I uncovered an interesting Civil War story that involves a family from early Huron County Ohio. Orlando D. Ells, the son or Aaron Ells was a Lt. in Company B 7th Illinois Infantry. Orlando moved with his family from New York to Fitchville Ohio. Orlando then moved by himself to Illinois where he entered the Army in 1861.

Orlando died in Mar 1864 at the Officer's Hospital in Nashville Tenn of Pneumonia. His father, Aaron drove a horse and wagon to Nashville, picked up the body and returned him to Huron County where he is buried in Fitchville.

My G-G-Grandfather, Private Luther D. Porter was also a member of Co B. 7th Illinois Infantry. When Luther returned from the war he named his first child Orlando Ells Porter. That child died at age 3. Luther's next son was James (my great grandfather). James named his son Orlando Ells Porter (my grandfather). Orlando Sr named his son Orlando Ells Porter Jr (my father) and my name is Martin Ells Porter and I have a nephew Samuel Ells Porter.

I'm trying to determine why my Civil War grandfather, Luther Porter was so impressed with Huron County Orlando Ells that he named his son and then his grandson was named for this person.

I'd also like to determine if there are any living descendents of the Ells family in or around Huron County Ohio that I can contact. Any help you may be to this effort would be greatly appreciated. If you know someone else that might be helpful in this effort please forward this to them or let me know so I can contact them.

Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Martin Ells Porter
