Gary,
You may have already tried this site.
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asphttp://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp
You can view John and Margaret's death certificates. Sadly, the informant did not know John's parents. Can also view 1850 cenus but not 1860.
There was a John W. Harwood that showed up on the 1850 Census in Washington County, NY. He is 16, born in England and is listed as a painter. He is listed with:
CROWDER
Thomas, 32, painter, England
Emily, 28, Mass.
Charles, 4, NY
Samuel, 2, NY
Eleanor, 6 months, NY
HARWOOD, John W., 16, painter, England
[There is John Harwood, 28, farm laborer, from England in Onondaga County, NY in 1860. He has no real estate or property claimed.]
Interesting what John's occupation is in 1860, Liberty Twp., Highland County, Ohio:
HARWOOD
John W., 27, carriage painter, England
Margaret, 22, Ohio
Eugene, 3, Ohio
Fred, 1, Ohio
Catherine, 18, NY
RICHARDS, Lydia, 16, Ohio ($1600 in real estate)
Lydia probably Margaret's sister as Catherine may be John's. Note that she was born in NY about the time the one on 1850 census.
I also found on the 1860 census in Springfield Twp., Clark County, Ohio:
HARWOOD
John, 60, England (looks like farmer?)
Ann,, 20, NY
Robert N., 19, NY (something?) hand
Harriet, 13, NY
cant' read name, female, 11, NY
Mary, 15, NY
Whoa! Just checked for John Harwood, born in England about 1800. Town of New Lebanon, Columbia County, NY (Near Albany and about 50 miles south of Washington Co.)
HARWOOD
John, 50, Meth. minister, England
Fanny, 43, England
Elizabeth, 21, England
Fanny, 15, NY
Anna, 12, NY
Robert, 10, NY
Catherine, 8, NY
Mary, 6, NY
Harriet, 4, NY
Caroline, 1, NY
Ann, Robert, Harriet, Mary and Catherine (with John W.) sure look like the same people.
None of this proves a thing but may give you something to check out.
good luck,
Steve
