Janey,
I'm not connected to these families and can't tell you anything prior to them coming to Highland, and not much afterward. I found teh reference of Thomas and Robert's tannery in Ayres' book of HIghland. This book also says that William Lyle (b. 1805) married Sarah, daughter of Thomas and Catherine (Cunningham) Baskin. It says notheing more of the parents but lists Sarah's children as William, Annie, Verna, Olive and Martha.
Are you sure that father and son ran tannery? McBride's book of ded records shows that on 27 June 1835, Thomas Baskin, Sr. and Catherine, his wife, sold to Robert Baskin and Thomas Baskin, Jr., 95 acres in Highland. Maybe these are brothers who had tannery. Robert and Thomas (no Jr. or Sr.) had at least 3 more properties in their names in the next 3 years.
I only have indices for 1820, 1830 and 1840 censuses. 1840 shows Robert Baskin and Thomas Baskins both in Marshall Twp., on the same page. A look at Thomas record may give his age bracket to see if this is Sr. or Jr. Perhaps Thoamas, Sr. had moved on before 1840. That year also shows Andrew Baskins in Jackson Twp. and John Baskin in Liberty. (1850 shows that John Baskin, 52, is from PA and is the county recorder. With him is Cyrus, 12, born in OH.
1830 index has Andrew and Thomas Baskins both in Liberty. 1820 has only Thomas Baskins in MAdison Twp.
Back to the deed book. Says that in 1819 Thomas Baskins sued the heirs of James Thornton, deceased. Seems that Thornton agreed to sell 100 acres while living to Baskins. He must have prevailed as in 1823, Thomas and Catherine Baskins sold 100 acres in Madison to Joseph McWilliams. And in 1838, Peter and sarah Muhlenbergh and Isaac and Hetty Heister of Berks Co., PA, to Thomas Baskins of Highland Co., OH, 45 acres Patented to Gen. Peter Muhlenbergh on 10 Feb 1799. Peter and Hetty were the only surviving children of the General. It is not stated here, but I assume the land is in Highland Co. It was part of the Virginia Military District ahere land was given as payment to Revolutionary war veterans from Va.
good luck,
Steve
