Hiram Gay, 1903
Maryville Times (Blount Co. TN) February 6, 1903:
"Uncle Hiram Gay, a highly respected colored gentleman, died at the home of Sam Shadden on Wednesday night, after a lingering illness. Mr. Gay was one of our best citizens, and was well liked by all who knew him. He was born and raised in Miller’s Cove, this county. He was raised by a family by the name of Tipton, and was never a slave. He always had a pleasant word for all he met and was a universal favorite. For years he conducted a barber shop at this place, but owned considerable property in Greenfield, Ohio. His remains were taken to that place on Thursday by his wife, and will be buried there. Mrs. Gay will make her home there. Uncle Hiram was 72 years of age at the time of his death. All regret his death."
