Philip Carroll Family following 1813 Prisoner of War Death
Philip Carroll Sr. died in Dec. of 1813 from disease in a Prisoner of War camp in Detroit. His widow Mary was left with 9 children & no means of support. She lined the children up & had families choose a child. The oldest 6 were quickly taken by families in the Jefferson-Harrison Co. area with the exception of Anthony Wayne who was taken further west.It isn't known what exactly happened to the youngest 3, Jane, Henry, & Phillip Jr.It appears their mother retained custody, but had a breakdown which lasted some time.Phillip Jr. is my ancestor, & a history has surfaced saying he was "adopted" by an Olinger family. What is meant by adopted is unknown, could mean helped out financially & emotionally. He later added the Olinger name, but waited until after he had married to do so.This happened around the time his mother died in the mid 1830's.Phillip & his mother Mary appear in the 1830 census in Harrison Co.Phillip married Mariah (Maria) Feltenberger there in Sept. 1832.Phillip moved to Henry Co. Indiana by the late 1830's where his brother Henry had moved.I don't know what became of their sister Jane. There is a marriage record in Harrison Co. of a Jane Carrel to Parkinson Wheeler on June 8, 1832.The Carroll name was sometimes spelled Carrel at that time.I have no idea if this might be the Jane in my line.I was told this Parkinson married again about 1834, making it likely his Jane had died.I would also like to know if there is any connection of this family to Ephraim Taylor Carrel who died Dec. 18, 1837 in Harrison Co. Both families came from the same place in Pennsylvania.
