I don't think they had birth certificates that early, but they may have had them registered on cards. I don't know how early these started. You can write the Guernsey Co. Court House, Vital Statistics in Cambridge. Marriage records start about 1811. The death records don't start until about 1870. I checked the 1850 census and couldn't find Asa. May have been missed or used a middle name.
