Is it possible that the "E" in Mary E stood for Emma? If so, she could be the same person who simply went by her middle name when the census taker asked. (I had a gt grandmother whose name was Martha Rosetta and I searched for 30 yrs for Rosetta because I didn't know she had another name!) Just a thought.
