Karen, I'm guessing that the DSS Home mentioned in your posting might be the OSS Home. This would be the Ohio Soldiers and Sailors Home, which is located in Erie County, in Sandusky Ohio. The Home was started in the 1880s I believe, to take care of old soldiers and sailors, who because of disability, were not able to work. In the early 1900s it was full of Civil War veterans -- perhaps including your ancestor, who was a Civil War veteran. The Home still exists, but in 1979 the name was changed from Ohio Soldiers and Sailors Home, to Ohio Veterans Home. Information on the home can be found at the following site: http://ovh.ohio.gov/sandusky.asp The Ohio Veterans home also has an extensive cemetery, which can be searched at the web site. Even if your ancestor was not buried in the cemetery on the grounds, perhaps you can request further information via the web site. Good luck. Richard Notify Administrator about this message?
