Hello, Darke County researchers,
I have recently added information on James Dunham, Jr., s/o of James Dunham, Sr. to my DUNHAM family history.
James and James were both from Darke County, Ohio, and BOTH served in the Civil War. Because both men bore the same name and lived in the same county their Civil War service records were sometimes entangled as one and had to be clarified in many cases. James served 1861-1862 and James served 1864...BUT...they were two different individuals! (James Sr. 1861-1862 and James Jr. 1864)
James Sr. was the musician (fifer) serving in Co. G, 44th OVI. He returned home. Then in 1864 James Jr. enlisted as a private in Co. G, 44th OVI, yet upon being mustered in Cincinnati, he was in the reorganized regiment called Co. M, 8th OH Volunteer Cavalry. I have posted the official documents which confirm that these were two different men...both of Darke Co., OH.
The story, records, and 5 letters sent to Margaret Elizabeth (SLONAKER) DUNHAM from her husband, James (Jr.) have been added to my website. James DUNHAM Jr. became a casualty of the war when he was taken prison near Liberty, VA and died as a result at the infamous Andersonville Prison, GA where he was buried. His brother, Henry DUNHAM, was also killed in the Civil War. Their brother-in-law, Herman/Harmon REINECKE/REINNECKE, husband of Elmira DUNHAM, was also a casualty.
Both James DUNHAMs were my ancestral grandparents.
