Dear Murphy researchers,
I looked in the 1860 census for Independence, Ohio and I found (?) Ultan (Ulton or Alton) and all of his siblings living with parents Thomas and Catherine.
Results are as follows:
18th family visited, microfilm page 653
Thomas S. Murphy 42 Male Farmer From Ireland
Property worth $200
Catherine 43 Female From Ireland
Frank 16 Male New York
Urban 14 Male New York
Louisa 11 Female New York
(next page -654)
Florence Murphy 8 Female New York
Wm. 7 Male New York
Ultan (Alton) 1 Male Ohio
I am questioning this find because even though I know from Ultan Muprhy's death certificate that he was born about 1859, this particular roll of microfilm was so faded that I could barely make out his name, and I am wondering if anybody has a better roll of film from the 1860 census of Independence, Ohio. Look for the 18th family visited by the census-taker. Does it say "Ultan" after Florence and Wm.'s names on the top of page 654?
(My maternal grandfather's (John Connell's) middle name on his birth certificate in 1912 was "Alton", by the way. This could be a variation of "Ultan" or sloppy penmanship again.)
Ultan Murphy later in life moved north to the Independence Road (Cleveland, Ohio)-Canal Road-Campbell Road area, before settling east to the East 74th street neighborhoods on Claasen and Covert avenues (dying in 1918 on Covert Avenue.)
All of these Cleveland addresses are a drive north from Independence, Ohio.
If this information helps any of you New York Murphys as well (besides Ohio Murphys), let me know.
