Murphy - Wylie (Wiley)

Dear Cuyahoga and Ohio Murphy researchers:

My online GEDCOM can be found at http://www.gencircles.com/users/connellc/3
and http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=connellc.

Since much research has aleready been performed with respect to the
(a) Cuyahoga County Archives and
(b) the online CPL Necrology file and
(c) Fairview Public Library's census microfilms,
PLEASE read all the information in that GEDCOM on Ultan Murphy, John J.
Connell, Thomas Costello and Mary Bayne, and Patrick H. Wylie CAREFULLY,
CAREFULLY before responding to the following query:

I am looking for the parents of Ultan Murphy. Censuses from 1900 and 1910
suggest he was born in Ohio. Irish patronymics suggest his father might be
called Frank, but no Ultan has been found in a census household with a Frank
as head of household in census years 1870 or 1880.

Ultan does not show up in any Murphy household in the censuses I have
checked so far, and I have looked at the 1870 census for Newburgh, Rockport,
Mayfield, and all the outlying suburbs of Cleveland. I have checked wards 1
through 4 for the city of Cleveland itself in the census year 1870. I am
working on the other wards as this is written.

The number of people with Murphy surnames at that time in Ohio is staggering
(!!!), which is why I am wondering if anyone else has a Murphy family that
includes a son named Ultan during the mid- to late-1800s. It may not just be
Cuyahoga County.

I am also looking for Patrick H. Wylie (also spelled Wiley), a carpenter who
was living on Walnut Street, Cleveland, in 1883, and whose daughter, Mary
Jane Wylie, was Ultan Murphy's first wife. (The 1910 census has Ultan living
with his second wife, Margaret Reynolds, for eight years. There is no wife
in the 1900 census. This suggests that (a) Ultan was married to Ms. Reynolds
in about 1902 and that (b) Ultan Murphy and Mary Jane Wylie parted ways
through a divorce, a death or other unknown event.

Since Ultan Murphy also does not appear in a public record until about 1883
(the marriage license record that has Ultan (Uttum) Murphy and Mary Jane
Wylie getting married on 04/10/1885), this might suggest that Ultan (an
engineer in a brickyard) and Patrick Wylie (a carpenter) plied the building
trades together in Ohio (not necessarily Cleveland) and that Ultan may have
lived in a Wylie household during the 1880 census.

I have checked the Wylie households for the 1880 Cleveland census, and no
Ultans have turned up. Again, I am wondering if those who have Wylie/Wiley
surnames have an Ultan Murphy living in their midst in 1880 or thereabouts
in the state of Ohio.

It would be a great help if a researcher who has Murphy or Wylie surnames in
their past has uncovered Patrick or Ultan living in their midst in the 19th
century. This request is not limited to Cuyahoga County, Ohio.

Chris Skurkey
