What happened to Frank Hefner/Hofner/Hafner?

I am trying to solve a small historical puzzle regarding the family background of a Cleveland balloonist, 'Leo Stevens.' That was his stage name.

He must have been born in late 1870 or early 1871, in Cleveland. His parents were Frank Hefner (possible spelling), who married his mother Anna Waldheger (Valdger) in Aug. 1869.

But by Sept. 1877, Anna was able to re-marry, to a man named Alois Schutt. So the question is: what happened to Frank? No one can find his death around that time, and possible divorce papers haven't yet turned up.

Nor can we find Anna (on a ship) coming from Prague/Bohemia in the 1860s, although by 1869 she was able to marry her first husband Frank (also Bohemian by birth). They had 3 children in Cleveland (last in May 1875), but only the 2 boys survived.

I would be grateful for any leads, and happy to share what info I have already.
