LEWIS HOLT, son of RACHEL ANN and JOHN NELSON HOLT, was born in Crawford County, Ohio, April 22, l836, where he grew to manhood, and died April l5, l9l8, being 82 years, two months and 23 days old.
He was married July 27, l858, to ROSANNAH ELIZABETH BROWN, of Crawford County, Ohio, and to them were born nine children, of which six are still living. They moved to Decatur County, Iowa, in the spring of l859 and located on a farm one mile north of Van Wert, where they raised their family and spent the best years of their lives. He was a soldier in the Civil War and was in Sherman's march from Atlanta to the sea. His wife died in l909. The remaining children are CHARLES F., W.M., JEANETTE P. BOATMAN, EDWIN H., JESSE F., and ROSANNA E. BOGGS.
They were pioneeers in the wilderness of this country when very few families were here and endured all the privations and hardships of pioneer life and have always been friends to the needy--always endeavoring to brighten the lives of others. He was a carpenter by trade and has built many homes throughout his neighborhood. A man that was a friend to justice, industry, temperance, education and morality. Always trying to discourage wrong and to strengthen and build up the right. Doing good to others, especially the needy, was the joy of his life. He lived his life on the golden rule of "Do unto others as ye would have them do unto you," and he numbered his friends by all who knew him.
Having lived a clean, honest, moral and industrious life, he died strong in the hope of a happy future, promised to the pure and faithful. He was buried in the Van Wert Cemetery alongside his wife and three departed children, July l7th, l9l8.
