I don't have any specific information on your John J., but my SMITH line came from Tiverton, Coshocton County to Hardin County, Iowa between 1855-1856. There were in Iowa for the 1856 State Census and for the 1850 census they were still living in Tiverton.
Christopher SMITH born abt. 1810-11 m. Harriet SHELDON about 1838-39. They had children...the first 8 born in OH and the last 6 in Hardin County, Ia:
1. Margaret b.1839
2. Squire James b. 1841
3. John H., b. 1843 (my line...married Julia)
4. Thomas Jefferson, b. 1846
5. Chloe Ann, b. 1848
6. Patience b. 1849
7. Hester J., b. 1851
8. George Washington, b. 1854
9. Sarah C., 1856 Hardin Co, IA
10. Clark R., 1858
11. Martha F., 1860
12. Emma Eldora, 1862
13. Nettie E., 1865
14. Joseph C., 1868

Christopher claimed both parents born in New Jersey on the 1880 census of Hardin County. Any possible connection do you think? The time frame is good :D
