I am an author writing a book about Charles Young. He was a regular army officer serving as a professor of military science at Wilberforce University from 1894-1898. He served as an advisor to the Ninth Ohio National Guard (Colored) Battalion during a summer encampment at the Clinton County Fairgrounds in 1897. Young commanded the battalion a year later during the Spanish American War. I wondered if anyone had any information concerning that summer in Wilmington, Ohio. Specifically, I'm looking for dates, numbers of soldiers involved, what the local community thought, or photos. Does the local paper have any articles about the summer encampment?
Thanks,
Brian Shellum
