I sure could use some help here and I sure do hope someone has some ideas! My great grandmother Elva Haines Smelcer was born in Wilmington, Clinton Co., Jan. 22, 1865. Her father sent his young wife to live with relatives in OHio when he went to war, to keep her and the new baby on the way, safe. I am told there are no birth certificates issued for that year. I believe the relatives she went to visit were Colletts or Haines, since her mother's maiden name was Collet and since she named her baby's middle name Haines. The Colletts and Haines were Quakers and I have looked at least at some meeting record books from the area and have found nothing. Has a newspaper from that era survived there and could someone check that for me, at the library, perhaps, if they get a chance? Or does anyone have any other ideas? I am trying to find who it was that her mother, Catherine Smelcer, was staying with to see whom our relatives were in that area. If anyone has any ideas I would be ever so grateful. I am in Santa Cruz Co. in Calif. if anyone needs anything looked up here!
