Based on his census entries, an estimated birthdate is about 1821. Findagrave says his death date is 31 Oct 1898 and he is buried in Unionville Cem, Unionville, Putnam Co., MO.

Findagrave also says his middle name is "Pepper". The death certificate for William Joseph Applegate says his father's name was "Nelson Peeper Applegate".

There are TWO Nelson Applegates in and around Brown and Clermont Counties in OH in the 1840s. Both about the same age.

Someone posted an unsourced obituary on the Ancestry Boards for Mrs. Eliza Applegate, wife of Nelson Applegate, who resided in Unionville, Putnam Co., MO (she actually died in Quincy, IL while visiting a daughter). I'm trying to track down where the obituary came from.
