I found a death record for Margaret Hagerton who died in 1940 in Wayne Twp., Champaign County. It says that her parents were Peter Hagerton and Mariah Orahood. I'm trying to find out who the parents of this Mariah were. Looking at census records, Peter came from Virginia and was born about 1828; Mariah was born in Ohio in about 1836; their children included Margaret, John, Mary, and Charles. In 1870 they were living in Champaign County near some families that I recognize, John and Mahala Mattox (Mahala was the daughter of Caleb Orahood and Betsy Shirk); James and Susan Conard (Virginia Susan Conard was the daughter of Betsy Shirk and 2nd husband Ezekiel Clements)and Ezekiel and Betsy (Shirk) Clements. The only thing I can guess is that Mariah was a daughter of Caleb and Betsy Orahood that we hadn't discovered yet. Does anyone recognize these Hagertons?
