I have just recently taken up looking for my Marshall ancestors. Specifically, I am looking for George C. Marshall.
My Mother's maiden name was Celestine Herberta
Marshall and she was born 1917 in Columbus, Ohio to
Herbert Miles Marshall b.1888 and Ida Mabel Ept. Herbert Miles Marshall was the son of George C. Marshall b. 1851 d. 12-21-1921 and Elzina Margaret White. George was an engineer who worked on steam engines in factories and may have worked on river boats as he lived in Gallipolis, OH on the Ohio River.
I found on the 1860 census a listing for Conrad Marshall and Mary Jean Steward. Listed there also, is Herbert 2 years old and George C. Marshall 8 years old. I was wondering if anyone might have any information on George? I don't think he was a child of Conrad because Conrad would have been only 14 years old when George was born. Maybe they were brothers? The story we have is George ran away from home when he was 14 years old. Not much else is known. I did find an application for a birth certificate dated in 1942 by my grandfather Herbert and it listed his father's birthplace as North Lewisburg, Ohio. That is what led me to Champaign County,OH. I just find it very
peculiar that George named a son Herbert and then I
find a George and Herbert living together in Ohio in 1860.
I found this information about Conrad on another forum, but the email email@example.com address in is no longer active.
Christiana German (b. ca. 1814, PA) married James Miller Steward (b. ca. 1804, PA). Their daughter, Mary Jean Steward (b. April 21, 1838, Milton, Union Co., PA) married April 09, 1857, Urbana, Champaign Co., OH to Conrad Marshall (b. June 15, 1833, Schuylkill Co., PA). Their children: Herbert Lowery, Amy Louretta, Ernest Steward, and Walter Alexis. They lived in Leavenworth Co, Kansas where Mary Jean died in an accident 11-24-1887 in Linwood, KS.
I would appreciate any help you can give me with George. Contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org. I would be more than happy to share what I have also. By the way, my mother is still going strong at 89 years old. Thank you!
