RAILROAD(S) IN URBANA ~ 1848
IS THERE A RAILROAD HISTORIAN MONITORING THIS FORUM?...or can someone refer me to one in the Urbana area, or Champaign County?
We are attempting to trace the "work history" of my gggrandfather, Peter Greenen and his sons... all of whom worked for one of the "forerunners" of the Pennsylvania.
This family immigrated from Ireland, with the father, Peter, probably coming first (December 1848) and then "sending back" for his family. He would have arrived in Urbana in 1849 or 50.The family is listed in the 1850 census.
"Tradition" has it that he "homesteaded" 160 (or 120) acres of land in Union Township; but we believe it may have been a "railroad deal" and we feel fairly sure he went to work for one of the railroads right away in 1849 or 1850.
One of our theories is that the railroad involved was the Steubenville and Indiana; but recently we were told that this railroad did NOT go through Urbana.True or False? If false; what would have been the "forerunner of the Pennsylvania" that went through Urbana in 1850?
Thanks,
Dan Drew,
Indianapolis.
