I posted the following note on the Tuttle surname page in 2002 but did not receive any responses. If you are from one of these lines and would like the documents identified below, please write to me at

I am not a Tuttle researcher but came across some old papers that may be of interest to a Tuttle researcher. The name on most of the documents is Donald Chalfant Tuttle from the Ford City, Pa., Middletown, Ohio and Bellefontaine, Ohio areas. If you are interested in any of these documents, please contact me at The following are documents I have in my possession.

Membership card for the State of Ohio, Public Employees
Retirement System. Mr. Tuttle lived at 3712 Sherman Avenue, Middletown, Ohio at the time. No dates indicated.

Blank Air Raid Warning form for Allegheny County Counsel of
Defense (state unknown, date unknown). On the back is a list of pastries someone listed for 2 days, dates unknown.

List of typed written instructions for “The Man On The Floor” to an apparent Salesman, signed by J.R. Cramer (?).

Old ring size card, likely from G.C. Murphy Co.

“Rules for Female Employees” from the G.C. Murphy Co.,

Typed note from W.H.H. to “Carpenter Tuttle” about payroll
amounts and sales. Likely from someone at G.C. Murphy Co.

Movie Sweepstakes ticket from the Paramount Theater. Undated and no location identified for the Paramount Theater, possibly in Middletown.

Mileage chart from Middletown to locations throughout the U.S. From the George H. Perry Insurance Agency, General Insurance and Bonds, Middletown-Eaton Road, State Route 122 in Middletown, Ohio.

Mileage chart from Kittanning, Pa to several locations in the U.S. Pinted for the Alexander Hotel and Restaurant in Kittanning, Pa.

May 9, 1926 Wm. N. Taggart Slate and Tin Roofing Furnace Work to Thos Ault on Euclid Avenue in Toronto, Ohio. Includes 5 prepaid sales tax stamps for the state of Ohio, 2 for 2 cents and 3 for 12 cents.

August 31, 1934 Check for $20.00 from the Grove City, Pennsylvania National Bank to Mr. Tuttle from R.N. Ruckles (?).

March 25, 1934 Statement from Frank G. Myers Plumbing and Heating at 205 Fifth Street in Toronto, Ohio, to Mr. Tuttle, for parts. It was paid by F.G. Muis on April 20, 1936. Includes 3 prepaid sales tax stamps for the state of Ohio.

June 3, 1936 Handwritten bill from Morens Flower Shoppe, F.T.D. Member in Toronto, Ohio, to Mr. Tuttle for flowers sent in April for Easter, May for mothers day and May for memorial. Includes 5 prepaid sales tax stamps, 3 for 1 cent and 2 for 3 cents.

November 16, 1936 Mr. Tuttle received a memo from J.A. Krut (probably from G.C. Murphy Co.) Regarding the “U.S. Docial Security Act”

April 30, 1938 Mr. Tuttle obtained a fishing license from the State of Ohio. He lived on S. Franklin in Sidney, Ohio. Shows his age at 24.

October 19, 1938 Mr. Tuttle/Mr. Carpenter received a notice from W. H. Hall of G.C. Murphy Company about orders they were not placing.

October 19, 1938 Mr. Tuttle/Mr. Carpenter received a letter from W. H. Hall of G.C. Murphy Company about getting ready for Christmas sales.

November 29, 1938 typed written note about “Our $1.19 Umbrellas”, signed by W.C. Shaw. No store name or location was mentioned.

December 17, 1938 W.H. Hall sent a memo to “Carpenter Tuttle” telling him to “drag out all the old, crappy merchandise and put a price on it that will move it.”

January 3, 1939 Employment contract between Mr. Tuttle and the G.C. Murphy Company for his employment as an Assistant Manager in the Middletown, Ohio store.

August 3, 1939 Subscriber’s receipt from the Pathfinder Publishing Company, signed by Roberta King. On the back is a note of an address of 1535 Williams (?), Denver, Co. and the name Roberta King below it.

September 2, 1939 Letter from John D. Inskeep from the Security Federal Savings and Loan Association of Bellefontaine, Ohio to Mr. Tuttle at 517 S. Main Street in Middletown, Ohio. The letters acknowledged Mr. Tuttle’s receipt of the second distribution of $262.50, due Mr. Tuttle under the will of his uncle, Dr. Robert W. Chalfant.

October 27, 1939 Fishing licence with a residence at 517 S. Main Street, Middletown, Ohio 45042. License were purchased from Harry Clark Sporting Goods at 13 North Broad Street, Middletown, Ohio.

November 4, 1939 Receipt from Sears Roebuck & Co., store 3100 to Mr. Tuttle at 517 S. Main Street, Middletown, Ohio for 1 table radio totaling $20.56. Also has 4 prepaid sales tax stamps for $.15 each.

November 16, 1939 A bonded receipt for the “Open Road For Boys, The Real Publication For Boys” from Blue Ribbon Publications, 303 West 42nd Street, New York City and signed by what appears to be Ernest Kinser.

January 2, 1940 Employment agreement between G.C. Murphy Company and Mr. Tuttle for his employment at the Ford City Pa. store with the title Assistant Manager, earning $135.00 per month.

January 22, 1940 empy envelop that was sent from Jewett, Ohio to Mr. Tuttle at 517 So. Main Street in Middletown, Ohio. It was forwarded to Mr. Tuttle at 404 Ford St. in Ford City, Pa. on January 23, 1940.

January 29, 1940 a typed notice regarding social security deductions.

January 31, 1940 Newsletter “Special Announcement” from “The G.C. Murphy Company Veterans’ Club” in McKeesport Pennsylvania.

February 23, 1940 small empty envelope sent from 517 South Main Street in Middletown, Ohio to D.C. Tuttle at 727 Fifth Avenue in Ford, City, Pa.

March 26, 1940 Motor Vehicle Registration for 1941 from the Pa Department of Revenue.

May 2, 1940 empty envelope from Toronto, Ohio to Mr. Tuttle at 729 Fifth Avenue in Ford City, Pa. Postage stamp used was a pony express 80th anniversary stamp.

June 25, 1940 Bill from “The Manchester” in Middletown, Ohio to Mr. Tuttle for a room, totaling $2.10.

June 25, 1940 Bill from the “Young Men’s Christian Association” of Middletown, Ohio for Mr. Tuttle for 1 week. Total amount, $3.25.

July 1940 Postcard from JE Cramer with greetings from Portland, Maine.

July 1940 Postcard from Mary to Donald Tuttle, Complainant/o G.C. Murphy Company in Ford City, Pa. Card was mailed from Franklin, Pa.

July 18, 1940 Postcard from Ruth and Lovanna to Mr. Tuttle, C/O G.C. Murphy Company, Ford City Pa. Card was from Mount Washington NH.

July 21, 1940 Letter sent to Mr. Tuttle at 729 5th Avenue, Ford City, Pennsylvania from Don and Marie Dudley. Mr. Dudley was the Restaurant Manager of the Cozy Rest Restaurant on Route 50 in Grafton, West Virginia.

August 9, 1940 Mr. Tuttle sold land in Toronto, Jefferson County Ohio to W.S. Carson for $1,800 with 6% interest. The mortgage was satisfied on April 3, 1942.

October 29, 1940 A letter from P.L. Sample to Mr. Tuttle regarding “Intemperance!!!” The memo was from a store in McKeesport, Pa. and addressed problems drinking, sexual affairs and careless in money affairs!

November 14, 1940 Invoice from S. Buchsbaum & Co. located at 243 East Huron Street, Chicago, Ill. To Mr. Tuttle of the G.C. Murphy Co., 729 Fifth Avenue, Ford City, Pennsylvania for 2 batches of 70 and 60 each of “Only Sterling Silver Charms” and “Only Sterling Silver Bracelets”.

January 31, 1941 Execution of the will of Robert W. Chalfant by executor John D. Inskeep in Logan County, Ohio. Mr. Tuttle was one of 27 defendants listed in the probate court record. Other surnames listed were Watkins, Duff, Crock, Chalfant, White, Allam, Prinz, Webster, Arbaugh, Strausbaugh, King and Davis.

February 3, 1941 Letter from attorney John C. Hover (located at 21-24 Peoples Commercial Bldg. In Bellefontaine, Ohio) to Mr. Tuttle regarding ways to finalize the sale and dispersing of money and property of Robert Chalfant.

February 10, 1941 empty envelope from Ms. L.C. White at 120 So. Shermango St., Mercer, Pa. to Mr. Tuttle, C.o G.C. Murphy Co, McKeesport, Pa.

March 21, 1941 Letter from attorney John C. Hover (located at 21-24 Peoples Commercial Bldg. In Bellefontaine, Ohio) to Mr. Tuttle regarding ways to finalize the sale and dispersing of money and property of Robert Chalfant.

August 15, 1941 W.C. Shaw of G.C. Murphy Company issued a notice regarding, “Physician Prescribes Courage and Calmness in Facing Life’s Problems”. Is a set of 10 rules to avoid a breakdown.

September 8, 1941 Electric bill from the Duquesne Light Co. at 224 Fifth Avenue, McKeesport, Pa. to J.G. Haughey at 1314 Freemont Street in McKeesport, Pa.

1942 Mr. Tuttle’s membership card for the Toronto Lodge of the “Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio.

1942 Mr. Tuttle’s Operator’s License for 1942 for the State of Pa.

February 6, 1942 Membership card for Mr. Tuttle in the “Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite”, in Valley of Dayton, Ohio. Mr. Tuttle lived 729 Fifth Avenue in Ford City, Pa.

February 18, 1942 J.A. Krut from G.C. Murphy Co. issued a letter to all employees regarding the purchase of “Defense Savings Stamps and Bonds”.

August 14, 1942 U.S. Office of Price Administration for registration of rental dwellings, DD 2-D, showing Jane Miller of 1102 Park Street, McKeesport, Pa, renting the same to Mr. Tuttle for $45.00 per month.

1943 Operator’s license for Pennsylvania Department of Revenue.

February 12, 1943 Form PD-423 issued to Mrs. Donald Tuttle at 1102 Park Street, McKeesport, Pa. for a Gas cooking range fro Spear and Company. The form was part of the U.S. War Production Board.

November 9, 1943 Letter from C.E. Frey, Chairman of the Manpower Committee at G.C. Murphy Company, to the Selective Service System at the First National Bank Bldg in Apollo, Pa. regarding Mr. Tuttle. The letter was a request for a deferment because of the workload the war caused on their staff and staff turnover.

July 12, 1959 Mr. Tuttle’s FCC permit for restricted radiotelephone operator in Detroit, Michigan.
