Diane, here's my logic:

In 1830 there is no Edward Wallace in the US Census, but there is an Ewd Wallace in Vermillion county, Indiana, living next to Robert Wallace. This presumed Edward is 20-29 and Robert is 30-39 so they could be brothers.

Other evidence they're brothers and that this Edward Wallace is from Butler County, Ohio: FamilySearch reveals that a Robert Wallace married a Catharine Reynolds on 10 Jan 1822 in Butler county, Ohio. The 1850 census shows Robert & Catharine Wallace in Vermilion county, Illinois, making it likely they're the same people married in Butler county and the same Robert Wallace in Vermillion county, Indiana in 1830 and 1840. Edward Wallace married Sarah Carson in Butler county a few years later on 25 Sep 1826. Finally, in the 1850 census both Edward and Robert were born in Virginia.

It is more difficult to connect your g-grandmother Caroline to Sarah Carson Wallace. Edward Wallace's wife would appear to be the same in 1830 and 1840 as his presumed wife is 20-29 and 30-39, resp. This would be the age of Sarah Carson--her father William had three females, age 10-15, living with him in Lemon township, Butler county in 1820--presumably his daughters. So I made the assumption that Sarah was Edward's wife til at least 1840. Edward has no wife in the 1850 census, as you know. His youngest child was your g-grandmother Caroline, who was born in 1846, so it's possible Sarah died during her birth. I looked through the cemetery records on the Vermillion genweb site and couldn't find Sarah so that was a brick wall. Caroline shows up with a Jane Wallace (b 1800) and her oldest brother Clark in the 1860 census; possibly Jane was her step-mother.

It looks like Caroline may have married Sylvester Ingram in Edgar county, Illinois in 1867. Is that the right one? Have you been able to look at that marriage certificate, which should have Caroline's mother's name?

Barb
