Elijah Johnson / Phineas Porter

Elijah Johnson appears in Mead twp on the 1840 census. He had probably just arrived from Fayette county PA within the previous year. By 1850, Phineas Porter and his family also came to Belmont co from Fayette co along with at least one brother and sister (m McFarland). They are all clustered near one another in York twp. Then they all picked up and moved to Appanoose co IA by 1860.

The 1850 census for Elijah Johnson shows Ruth Johnson, age 85. I'm guessing she died before the families moved Iowa. Elijah and the Porters were all about the same age. He named his last son Phineas Porter Johnson, born 1852 in Belmont county.

These folks are likely related but I've been unable to find the needed clues in any of the three states they resided in together. There is fairly good info out there for the Porters but I'm not finding any marriages to Johnson.

Are there cemeteries in Belmont county going back to the 1850s? Is there a Ruth Johnson listed in any of them for that time frame? It's just a guess but it seems most likely that she died in York twp.

How about deed indexes for c1840-1855?

Any help appreciated. I have no significant leads for the parents of either Elijah or his wife Anna Jane Foster.

-Michael
