I too have a "William Smith" in my family tree.
This one was born on December 6, 1785, in the Town of Manchester, Bennington County, VT (confirmed).
He and other family members came to the Northwest Territory.
Nathan Smith was found in Morgan County in 1819.
But with changing county lines, I have no idea where Nathan lived before Morgan County, OH, was formed.
Can you tell me the names of your William's other children (to compare "family" names?)
Grasping at Straws in Minnesota,
MaryLu
