If he was a Rev. War soldier, then have you contacted the NARA to see what records they have of him and his service? Pension papers may well contains wife's name, and children. They are online, and you can visit the site to get instructions on how to request service/pension records.
You might also, if you haven't already, requested a free patriot lookup with the DAR....you can do this online, at their site. If he IS included in their records, then you can request a copy of the paperwork the woman submitted when she joined the DAR with him as her vet......this would, at the very least, give his wife's name, marriage info, and at least one of his children, the one the woman joined with , as her line of descent.
