The only documentation I can find for Bradley Crane’s death is his tombstone in Cherry Valley Cemetery. You have probably already found a photo of that at the Find-A-Grave website. Links there also trace back Sophia Sawdey’s ancestry. One of her ancestors was Sarah Soule Sawdy (name sometimes spelled that way), who some claim was a descendant of Mayflower passenger George Soule, although I have not been able to trace her back to George. Sarah Soule Sawdy (1765 RI -?) married Silas Sawdy (1766-?).

I think Bradley Crane’s parents were Gilbert Crane (1797 New Jersey) and his wife Eliza Payne (1802 NY). The 1850 census of Elk Creek, Erie County, PA has a Bradley “Crain”, born about 1840 in PA, in the household of Gilbert and Eliza “Crain”. Erie County borders Ashtabula County, Ohio, and Elk Creek is not very far from Cherry Valley. Obviously the census taker thought the name was spelled “Crain” and not Crane. But the approximate birth year for Bradley Crain of Elk Creek is very close to that calculated from his tombstone. A mile or so from Elk Grove is a crossroads community called Cranesville, and Crane Road runs through there.

Furthermore, as shown below, the parents of Sophia Sawdy lived in Erie County sometime between 1860-1870. The maiden name of Gilbert Crane’s wife Eliza came from a family tree I found at Ancestry.Com. That tree shows Gilbert Crane as having died about 1870, probably in Elk Creek.

Bradley and Sophia may have married in Pennsylvania, and then moved into Ashtabula County. As indicated at Find-A-Grave, Sophia married Windsor Gay after Bradley died. Her Ohio death record is under the name Sophy Gay. It can be found at the Family Search website. She died at age 52 on 21 Feb 1898 in Cherry Valley. (Ohio Deaths and Burials: Film 890260, reference V2 Page 78.)

Sophia Sawdey or Sawdy appears in the 1860 census of Richmond Township, Ashtabula County, Ohio with her parents, Tracy Sawdey (1824 PA – 1889, probably MI) and Sarah Ann Taylor (1822 NY- 1894, probably MI).

For some reason, the child Cora Crane went to live with her grandparents, who had moved to Girard, Erie County, PA. She appears there in the 1870 census as Eva Crane in the household of Tracy and Sarah A. Sawdy. Perhaps Eva was her middle name. In 1880, the same grandparents were living in Carrolton, Saginaw County, Michigan. Cora appears in that household as Cora Sawdy, and is specifically listed as “granddaughter”. Her age and birthplace in both censuses match what we would expect of Cora Crane, daughter of Bradley Crane. Therefore deductive reasoning ties Sophia Sawdy to that particular Sawdy or Sawdey family.

Cora Crane married James Titterington (name is spelled variously in several records) on 28 April 1883 in Tuscola County, Michigan. James was born about 1857 in Ireland. He appears in his brother Edward’s household in the 1880 census in Saginaw, Michigan. (Michigan Marriages: Film 983816). They had at least two children, Mable and Jessie, since they appear with their mother and stepfather (see below) in the 1900 Bay County, Michigan census.

James died between 1889 and 1891.Cora then married William H. Dresser (b. 1860 MI) on 31 Dec 1891 in West Bay City, Bay County, Michigan. That marriage record does not list her parents, but his were John H. Dresser and Elizabeth C. Vleit. (Michigan Marriages: Film 2342490, Image 493, Reference V1 Page 189).
