SCOTT, DR. JOHN W of Ashtabula & Geauga Co OH 1819-1852

Dr. John W. Scott (b. 1791 VT? NY?) and Mary Ann Hoyt (b. ca 1797 NY) m. 1821.
Children per 1850 census:
Noah, Mary A, John C, Charles, Maria. According to a biogr sketch in a published Geauga Co History, there were 3 other children, names unk. I don't have this publication, but I'd love to have the complete reference to him, if anybody has it.

John W. Scott d. 16 Jun 1852; wife Mary d. ca 1859 Parkman, Geauga Co OH.

Reference to his parents: possibly John Scot (immigrated from Scotland ca 1774) and Unkn. Witherspoon who resided Ryegate or Newbury VT. This John Scot was said to be from Glasgow, but more specifically from Govan Parish, Hillsheadholm (see "History of Ryegate Vermont" posted in its entirety at

Since 1850 Census shows Dr. John's pob as NY, he may be connected with Scotts in Phelps, Ontario Co; or Lyons, Wayne Co.

I think he is the John W. Scott who was in Richfield (Rome), Ashtabula Co OH in 1819. He was involved in several land transactions in Huntsburg, Geauga Co OH in the mid-1830's, when the Mormon families moved out. He was in Parkman by 1840 at the latest.

There is a reference to him in "Physicians in the 1820s, Ashtabula Co OH" at
In 1824, John W. Scott was one of the qualified practitioners who was "corporator" of a newly-formed Medical Society for Geauga and Ashtabula Counties.

Any clues about his siblings, where his children went after 1850, etc., would be much appreciated. I believe he may be a brother of my brick-wall ancestor Joseph Scott b. 1803 of Ontario Co NY, who settled first Ashtabula Co OH by 1830, then Huntsburg where he died in 1855.

If so, they may both be brothers of Giles D. Scott who lived in Rome from the 1820s to the 1880s, his son Giles E. Scott living there into the 1900s. Giles D. Scott was born 1807 in NY and in the 1880 census stated his father as b. Scotland. Giles, John W. and Joseph lived next to each other in Rome in 1830.

A John Graham Scott who also lived in the area, but removed to CA by 1880 with his daughter, stated his parents were also born in Scotland.

Finally, Benjamin Scott b. ca 1799 NY, was the only other Scott male age 21 or over, living in Richfield Twp in 1819 with John W. Scott. Benjamin probably went back to NY for a few years after he married Jane Bogue, since their first few children were born in NY. But he returned to Ashtabula Co and lived in Colebrook until he died in 1850, leaving 3 minor sons and several older children.

The "father b. Scotland" reference for several of these individuals is a recent find for me, and I think it may lead me to my own Scott ancestors.

Thanks for any help.
