Rockwell Stone & Family; NY -> OH -> WI

I'm searching for ancestors, descendants, records, in short, any information or research advice concerning Rockwell Stone and his family. What I have is this:

The minute book of the Trumbull Pioneer Association for 1892 to 1907 (available via google) mentions "a strange incident" in which 12 families comprising 76 individuals migrated from Louisiville, St. Lawrence Co., New York to Trumbull, Ashtabula Co., Ohio. One of these was "Rockwell Stone and family."

I'm unable to find a Rockwell Stone in the census records for St. Lawrence County, but there is a Nathan Stone in the 1810 census records for Messena, St Lawrence County, who appears again in Louisville in the 1820 and 1830 census records. An "Individual Record" at lists Nathan Stone III and Eunice Priest (both of Louisville) as the parents of Rockwell Stone, indirectly supporting the minute book records.

Although Rockwell doesn't appear in the St. Lawrence County census records, I found him in the 1850 census for Austinburg, Ashtabula Co., Ohio (again placing his birth in New York) with his wife Harriet (Hall), and children Rockwell Jr, Martha, and Wilber.

His son, Rockwell Stone Jr, appears first in the 1860 census of Lima, Rock Co., Wisconsin with wife Sarah J. Pekley, and children Franklin A., Edwin L., and Anson W. It also says he came from Ohio, tying him to the 1850 census cited above. He and his family appear again in 1870 and 1880, both times in Milton, Rock Co., Wisconsin. His marriage to Sarah Jane Pelkey is confirmed by their marriage record from Ashtabula County (available at that county's website on usgenweb).

I also found a Rockwell Stone among a list of names under "ENROLLMENT IN ROCK COUNTY. Town of Lima. First Class." in the Weekly Gazeette and Free Press (Janesville, WI) for 04 September 1863 (available on However, I have not been able to find him in's database of Civil War service records or the Pension Index. I greatly welcome help resolving this apparent disparity.

Also, census records for Rockwell Stone Jr in Rock County list him as a stone or brick mason. (Yes, I know this is becoming increasingly hilarious.) Any suggestions as to where I might find information on his employment would be very helpful.'s Wiconsin Death index for 1820-1907 lists a Rockwell Stone who died on 07 December 1886 in Rock County. I've not found a Rockwell Stone in the census records for that county after 1880.

That's about all I have. Please inform or advise me in any way you can. I appreciate any and all assistance.
