Bridget:
Nice to hear from you.We are somehow cousins.
John Franks parents, according to "Ohio Deaths and Burials, 1854-1997", were William Franks and Franc S. Markley (it is Frances Ann Markley) Franks. He was born 14 July 1856 and died 27 April 1919. (Same source...I've recently ordered his death certificate from the Ohio State Archives.) Maud and Minnie's parents were John Franks and Mary Boyer same as your ancestor John Franks II.It is Mary Boyer's FATHER that I believe was the Civil War soldier at Andersonville Prison.I am trying to confirm this. Check out the 3rd Ohio Calvary.I believe Mary's father was the John Boyer who died on 10 Jan 1865 and is buried at Ashland Cemetery is the father of Mary Boyer.I need to confirm it. Why do I think this?I have a letter from Ashland county to my g-grandmother, Maud, providing her grandmother, Sarah Garrett Boyer's death certificate.I find a Sarah Boyer on the 1870 Census with kids, Maria(h) (Maria Neff...her son Charles Neff is the informant on Sarah's death certificate), Mary, George and Melinda.I have found a marriage record for John Boyer and Sarah Garrett on 29 Apr 1854 in Richland, Ohio "Ohio Marriages, 1803-1900".As Sarah was born 8 Mar 1832 in Schaferstown, PA, died 26 Dec 1911 in Ashland, it is logical to assume, Maud, born 25 Jan 1878, knew her grandmother, hence asking for and receiving her death certificate--which I now have.I have Sarah's obit and it says her husband died some years prior. No mention of the Civil War.
Note--on the 1880 Census, Barbara Boyer is living with John and Mary (Boyer) Franks. She is listed as John Franks' mother-in-law.I think the Census was in error as she was 74 at the time and would have been 54 when Mary was born...do the math, really unlikely.I think she was John Franks' grandmother-in-law.She was born in Bavaria according to the Census.Additionally, on the SAME Census Mary notes her mother (Sarah Garrett) was born in PA which Sarah Garrett was...therefore, Barbara is obviously NOT her mother.Mary died of Consumption (TB) on 11 Apr 1888 in Richland, Ohio.I have her obit.
Your branch of the John Franks line was through Mary Boyer NOT Ellen Cosway...some people call her Crosby, WRONG.I've seen some incorrect genealogies out there on the internet.Your ancestor, John Franks II, the son of John Franks, was born in Jan 1884 and Mary didn't die till 1888. I've tracked John Franks III in John Franks, II's Obit, his sister was Mary Ellen? My mother, still alive, remembers Mary Ellen. Is your branch of the family still in Toledo?I'm asking because John Franks and Ellen Cosway Franks are buried at Forest Cemetery in Section X, Lot 86, Grave 11.Ellen is in Grave 10.Minnie Franks (I remember WONDERFUL Aunt Minnie) married Ellen Cosway's brother, Harry Cosway. She and Maud Franks Meyer are buried at Toledo Memorial out in Sylvania.
I'm very careful to confirm my info through sources, my research is very accurate...I've told you what is not confirmed, that is John Boyer's info.I will figure it out at some point.I am DAR through my mother's father's line.
If you have any further questions, email me at [email protected] look forward to hearing about your branch of the family tree, Cousin.
