Hi, MaryJean -

The Burk cousin who sent me that newspaper article is Terri Ramos, who is related to us through John L. Burk (father of Mary Caroline Burk who married Turner B. Ogletree). Terri descends from Mary Caroline's older brother, Frances Marion Burke. She and I have been trying to work backward from John L. Burk and his wife, Dicey Awtry/Autry. We have a couple of theories that are looking pretty good, but we're not all the way there yet.

I agree that large families often vary widely in their lifestyles. It's strange for us to think of a family getting up on a Sunday morning and swigging from Saturday's jug of liquor - probably only a someone with a serious alcohol problem would be doing that in the 21st century - but customs and mores may have been different back in 1887.

Debbie
