I found Ambrose Todd in 1850. He's in Stamford, but I can't find a clear page number. A printed page number looks like 285, but it doesn't match up right with ones on other pages, and the handwritten ones make no sense. If you have ancestry.com, he is indexed as "A.S. Sodd". His wife's name is Elizabeth, like in the 1860 census, but she's seven years younger than the one in 1860, so I am not sure if it's the same woman or not. Both were born in Connecticut. I know the Elizabeth listed in 1860 (born abt 1818) is too young to have been the mother of Ambrose C. Charles, Elizabeth, and Andrew Todd. Elizabeth was not an uncommon name back then, so he certainly could have had two wives with the same name. Ambrose's occupation is "Episcopalian Clergy" in the 1850 census, and I think that's also what's written (so badly) in the 1860 census.
